Invitation to Vent, Praise, and Even Whine

Have you ever been on a panel at a writing conference? Have you been an audience member, asking questions? Did you have a good experience? A bad one? What did you think of the moderator? Have you always wanted to express a strong opinion, one way or the other, about the way the panel was run?

Here's your chance!

At the beginning of May, I'll be going down to Pasadena, for the Sisters in Crime, Los Angeles, monthly meeting. The topic is writing mysteries for kids, and I'll be moderating a panel of four published writers.

I'm just getting started organizing things and coming up with some questions. If you've gone through anything like this, I'd love to hear from you. Was there anything you really loved or hated at your panel? Anything you would have liked the moderator to do, that she didn't?

All thoughts & suggestions welcome!

I enjoy panels for the most part. The thing I enjoy the least during a Q&A session is when an audience member uses the time to pitch his/her own work. I don't know how this can be prevented though. The best questions are ones that benefit a majority of the audience. Have fun! I'm sure you'll do a great job moderating! go you!

Thanks--that's a good point. I do think that's one of my jobs, to politely & hopefully with nice humor, get the panel back on track. Easy to say. :)

I hate that too. I've seen Q and As where the moderator said, before she even called on people, to ask general questions that might be useful to everyone, and not pitch their work or ask questions of interest only to them.

I'll make sure to do this. I hadn't thought about giving a pep talk to the AUDIENCE. It's a great idea!

panels
I just got back from Left Coast Crime where I attended panels and was on my first panel ever. It was fun. I liked the panels where the moderator asked silly questions - what was your childhood pet? What's your ringtone? Who was your first love? Decaf or half-caf? Some smuttier questions I cannot post here, but fun, nonetheless.

No pressure, moderator, but the more creative the question, the better the panel. You'll do fine. Just stay away from: Where do you get your ideas?

Re: panels
And...How long did it take you to write the book? :)

Thanks for the silly ideas. I'll dig a bit deeper for some of those!
